Looking at the global developments up to the year 2030<\/strong> it becomes clear that most city dwellers will live in Africa and Asia.<\/p>\n

In the coming years the three countries India, China and Nigeria alone will each see one billion people moving<\/strong> to their cities.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Comprehensive building projects <\/strong>will be necessary. To create living space<\/strong>. To create working space<\/strong>. To build leisure facilities<\/strong>. To improve mobility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

New Opportunities.<\/h6>\n

Sustainable Solutions.<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The rapid spread of urbanisation coupled with global population growth presents the entire human race with challenges, tasks and decisions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the same time, these challenges open up unique opportunities<\/strong> for us to develop smart<\/strong> and sustainable solutions<\/strong> that improve all our lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is now the time for us<\/strong> to take up these opportunities. For our children<\/strong>. For our grand-children<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

New Housing. New Living.<\/h6>\n

New Concepts.<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>Our forefathers<\/strong> often built very attractive houses<\/strong> that were in keeping with the region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For instance, I passed by this wonderful example (see above) on the way back through the Doh\u00e1ny Utca to my hotel in Budapest. I ask myself\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cHow is it possible that today<\/strong> we often commission architects<\/strong> to build soulless<\/strong> and badly insulated mass housing<\/strong> that often hardly lasts a generation<\/strong>?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn future how can we make the processes of our building more affordable<\/strong> and, at the same time, create beautiful, lasting<\/strong> and energy-saving houses<\/strong>?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs \u2018citizens\u2019 shouldn\u2019t we have a say <\/strong>in which buildings go up in \u2018our street or area\u2019<\/strong>?
\nSome of us would be sure to welcome this.\u201d<\/p>\n

New Perspectives. New Opportunities.<\/strong><\/h6>\n

Urban Creativity.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For a long time now cities have offered opportunities for sport, recreation and leisure.
\nPublic sports facilities, skating rinks, swimming pools, playgrounds, cycle paths and parks are omnipresent in most cities.<\/p>\n

Many of the new urban projects<\/strong> also demonstrate how incredibly creative<\/strong> they are.<\/p>\n

They open up new perspectives<\/strong> and attractive opportunities<\/strong> to tap into hitherto unexploited urban spaces<\/strong>.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For instance, in Toronto<\/strong> a 1.75 km long plot of wasteland underneath a main road was regenerated to form <\/strong>the \u201cBentway\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Urban Sports.<\/h3>\n

For some time now hitherto ignored urban spaces<\/strong> have come into the focus of innovative town planners. Local activists and entrepreneurs have an eye on this too.<\/p>\n

In Glasgow, for instance, underneath a section of the M74<\/strong> a sports park for young people<\/strong> is to be built.<\/p>\n

This entire space was just wasteland for a long time \u2013 until someone recognised its vast potential<\/strong>.
\nAnd now this space under the M74 has been transformed into an aesthetic space<\/strong>. For new urban sport<\/strong>. For social contacts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On an empty square<\/strong> in the Brooklyn<\/strong> area of New York City a children\u2019s bike park <\/strong>has been built.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In Mumbai local entrepreneurs turned unused urban spaces<\/strong> into football pitches<\/strong> by covering them with artificial grass<\/strong> and cashed in on the popularity of 5-a-side football.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Urban Gym.<\/h2>\n

Major projects always require urban development licences and subsidies. This is the only way to ensure that these projects last the distance. In exchange, locals and visitors alike benefit here from the new developments long term.<\/p>\n

However, we should never underestimate<\/strong> the smaller projects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Many are locally inspired<\/strong> and extremely visionary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For instance, urban gym projects <\/strong>can open up new perspectives<\/strong> and creative opportunities <\/strong>for the attractive use of space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

PARKOUR<\/h5>\n

… is probably the oldest and best known of the new urban sports. It was originally developed in France. Inspired by military fitness training parkour involves an attractive obstacle course over natural and built structures. By uninterrupted jumping, running, hopping, rolling and climbing parkour offers a competitive environment and, at the same time, a great workout.<\/p>\n

CALISTHENICS<\/h5>\n

… boring looks nothing like this :-))<\/p>\n

How do you keep fit in your city?<\/p>\n

In any case, I am now off out for a half-hour run in the park.<\/p>\n
